This guide provides an overview of the modules offered across three semesters, outlining key learning outcomes and assessments to prepare you for a dynamic, impactful career in public health.

Course Structure

Semester 1: Core 20 credit modules

  1. Epidemiology and Biostatistics
    • Learn to collect, analyse, and interpret health data.
    • Understand how to measure disease frequency, assess risk factors, and evaluate public health interventions.
    • Assessment: Data analysis project and written exam.
  1. Public Health Policy
    • Examine how public health policies are developed, implemented, and evaluated.
    • Explore the role of politics, economics, and ethics in shaping health policies.
    • Assessment: Policy analysis report.
  1. Medical Sociology
    • Analyse how social factors (e.g., socioeconomic status, culture, and behaviour) influence health outcomes.
    • Understand health inequalities and approaches to reducing them.

Semester 2: Core 20 credit modules

  1. Global Health
    • Study major global health challenges, including infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and health systems.
    • Understand international health organizations’ roles in promoting global health.
    • Assessment: Case study presentation.

Semester 3: Core 20 credit modules/Dissertation

  1. Dissertation (Supervision)
    • Conduct an independent research project on a public health topic of your choice, with guidance from an academic supervisor.

    • Assessment: Final dissertation (14,000).
    • Please note that the  Final dissertation is taught over 2 semesters and totals 40 credits

Learning and Assessment

Teaching Format: The program is delivered fully online using Google Classroom, an interactive, user-friendly e-learning platform. Each week includes a blend of self-paced content, interactive activities, and tutor-led sessions to enhance understanding and engagement.

  • Weekly Tutor Input: A live, tutor-led session will be held for 2 hours each week from 19:00 to 21:00, providing guidance, discussion, and Q&A opportunities.
  • Interactive Modules: Engaging content with videos, quizzes, case studies, and scenario-based learning.
  • Discussion Forums: Weekly discussions to collaborate with peers and reflect on key topics.
  • Flexible Learning: Access course materials anytime, anywhere, to fit your personal schedule.
  • Supportive Learning Environment: Tutors provide individualized feedback, and academic support is available throughout the program.

Assessment

Throughout the program, you’ll engage in a variety of assessment activities designed to develop and demonstrate your knowledge and skills. These include participation in discussion forums, reflective journal entries, live presentations, and longer written assignments.

  • Feedback: A 14 day turnaround for marking and feedback on assessed work.
  • Ongoing Support: Regular contact with your Student Support team, ensuring you can raise and resolve any concerns promptly.

Entry Requirements

Application and Enrolment: To apply, students are required to complete an online application form. As part of this process, you will need to submit a personal statement explaining why you are interested in studying public health, how this programme aligns with your career goals, and why you believe you are a suitable candidate for the MPH program. This helps us ensure you are well-positioned to succeed and make the most of your learning journey.

We know that many people from non-traditional backgrounds would succeed on our courses! That’s why we offer two different entry routes, taking into account your prior work experience and relevant qualifications. You will also need to meet our English language requirements.

Additionally, you will need to pass your first assignment set within your two-week induction period of the course in order to continue with your studies.

Academic Entry Route:

  • An undergraduate degree from an approved institution, equivalent to a UK Honours degree, or a relevant professional qualification.

Work Experience Entry Route:

  • A minimum of three years’ relevant work experience supported by a personal statement.

English Language Requirements:

  • As our courses are delivered in English, a high proficiency with English is required. If English is not your first language, your English ability should be equivalent to an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5. Don’t worry if you don’t hold an IELTS or equivalent qualification – we offer a free online English test to assess your proficiency.

Online Learning Experience
Your learning journey will be fully supported by high-quality materials and resources, all accessible through our advanced Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

On average, you’re learning experience will consist of the following:

  • Directed Learning (40%): This includes engaging in tutor-led discussions, Webinars and seminars, completing interactive exercises on the VLE, and watching videos and lecture casts. You can also schedule one-on-one sessions with your module tutor during their office hours, which are available on the VLE.
  • Self-Directed Learning (30%): This involves independent reading and research to deepen your knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.
  • Assessment (30%): Time spent preparing and completing assignments and activities that contribute to your overall assessment.

Typically, you will need to dedicate at least 15-20 hours of study per module each week.

Study Duration

The 1-year Master of Public Health (MPH) programme is designed to be completed entirely online, offering a flexible learning experience that fits into your personal and professional life.

Course Structure:
The MPH programme consists of 3 core modules per semester, each weighted at 20 credits, followed by a Dissertation total 40 credits  which is split into 20 credit taught and 20 Independent -learning to ensure that you complete the required 180 credits for graduation.

  • Semester 1: 3 core modules (20 credits each)
  • Semester 2: 3 core modules (20 credits each)
  • Semester 3: 3 core modules (20 credits each)
  • Dissertation:  (To be completed & submitted in the final phase of the programme)

Specific Start Dates

Recruitment for January intake, applications  will start in September and November and deadlines will be in October/December. Recruitment for September intake, will open September/October and  deadline will fall between February and May.
